Bank verification number *565*0# |
BVN serves as a crucial form of identification for individuals with bank accounts in Nigerian banks, including institutions like Wema Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank, GT Bank, FCBM Bank, UBA Bank, Heritage Bank, and others not mentioned in this article.
In Nigeria, it's common for individuals to have multiple bank accounts, particularly government workers who often maintain several accounts for savings.
In the past, multiple accounts were less common due to limited technology. They were typically reserved for well-educated individuals, and microfinance banks or locally-made boxes were used for this purpose.
However, today, the majority of citizens have multiple bank accounts. This can be attributed to various factors, such as the nature of their businesses or differences in bank charge rates, as in my case.
Despite having multiple accounts, individuals are issued only one Bank Verification Number, an eleven-digit identifier. This BVN is a powerful tool for combating fraud, as it collects comprehensive data during registration, including fingerprints and photographs.
Even if you change other personal details, your fingerprint remains unchanged, making it a unique identifier. BVN registration occurs once at the nearest bank branch.
Once you receive your BVN, it's crucial to keep it in a secure place, either by saving it in your mobile phone or writing it down in a diary.

- Each time you use this code, a service charge will be deducted.
- Never disclose your BVN to anyone, especially to websites that request it without proper verification. Sharing your BVN could grant unauthorized access to your bank account details.
- If someone claims to be from a bank and requests your BVN over the phone, do not provide it, as banks would not make such requests. Protect your privacy.
- You can only check your BVN based on the telecom company you use. For instance, if you use Glo, check your BVN using the Glo-specific code.
